“The assault and extortion I suffered in the hands of The Federal SARS in Akure today is enough to push me to get a visa and run away. I don’t deserve such a treatment in my own country ” he said .
Narrating the incident , he said he arrived Akure on a tour before the unfortunate incident
“I arrived in Akure on official duty with some of my colleagues on Thursday, we had just finished the OAU leg of our tour and in town for the FUTA leg.”
“We had our event on Friday in FUTA and every other member of the team returned to Lagos on Saturday morning except me.”
“I even went on to explain why I am in town and asked that they reach out to any of my employer’s branches here in Akure if they doubt any information i have given”
“In my mind, I was interacting with some reasonable law enforcement agents
Again, I played myself
I was rough handled and dragged by the belt into their Hilux Van
My friend with whom I was riding on the bike when they stoped us was asked to get on the back
They promised I would call whoever I needed to call when I get to their station”
“I got to their station, they placed us in separate rooms
I was in the same room with Inspector Emmanuel and Inspector Mary
There I called a staff of my employer who served as our escort during our stay in Akure, He sent me the regional manager’s number immediately
I was just trying to place a call to him when Inspector Emmanuel snatched my two phones, ended the call and placed them in front of him.”
“He later stood up and asked Inspector Mary to take my statement
They went around for 3 hours while I sat there helpeless.”
“They would later come back to ask us for money, to buy fuel for the van we rode in.
And for that they collected N10,000 in cash
10 crispy, freshly minted notes
All the cash I had on me
I was left cashless!” he narrated.
The agitated Fatai Stated that he has not been so down as he was after the event. He called on authorities to ensure that the officials who tortured him do not go scotfree.
YBTC News reached out to the accused persons.
One inspector Mary who was accused while reacting to the incident said she wasn’t at the scene of the incident
“I was not at the scene of the incident , definitely I know nothing about the crime ” she said
YBTC reached out to Mr Emmanuel who also denied taking money from the victim, he however confirmed the arrest stating that it was done in line with routine checks in Ondo state.
A source who doesn’t want to be mentioned however told this newspaper that the officials truly collected the money but the intervention of the Officer-in-charge who has since heard about the extortion and ‘torture’ is sending shivers down the spine of the accused officials .
“I can confirm that the money was collected and the Officer in charge has called the errant officers about the case” he said.
This case marks several cases that Nigerians have lamented as the allegation of inhumanity against men of the special anti-robbery squad hits on.
