—Police Harassment of Women: We are investigating violation of Rights— Presidency
YBTC News—The Presidency has said that the alleged harassment of women by agents of the Nigerian Police force is under investigation.
In a tweet by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Laolu Akande, the Presidency noted that: “Regarding some of our women who were reportedly harrassed & wrongly arrested in Abuja recently, a thorough investigation of what happened is ongoing. This administration will not tolerate any violation of the individual freedoms of our people & all infringements shall be punished”
This is coming after reports of women were alleged to have been harassed by members of the Nigerian Police Force during raids at night clubs in Abuja. The ladies were said to have been arrested by agents of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Joint Task Force and the Abuja Environmental protection Board.
On Friday 3rd May 2019, ASP Danjuma Gajere Tanimu – spokesman of the FCT Command – in a statement said probe into the matter has commenced.
“The command as a responsible corporate citizen views the allegations seriously. Consequently, a high powered team was constituted to investigate the veracity of the allegation”, he said.
Nigerians had marched in protest on the streets of Abuja and Lagos on the 4th of May, 2019 to condemn the arrests regarding it as harassment and an infringement on the rights of citizens.
