Military men have invaded the head office of Daily Trust in Abuja, packing computers and ordering all members of staff to leave the newsroom.
This is coming an hours after they had invaded and shut down the newspaper’s regional office in Maiduguri, where the editor and reporter were arrested.
“The military just invaded our Abuja office and seized all computers and phones after doing same in Maiduguri this afternoon,” a staff of Daily Trust Abuja shared with the media.
This may not be unconnected with a story published by Daily Trust on December 31 titled, “Boko Haram seizes 6 Borno towns”.
The story reads: “Despite denials by the Nigerian military, Boko Haram fighters seized Baga, Doron-Baga, Kross Kawwa, Bunduran, Kekeno and Kukawa towns of Borno State after three days of fierce battles from Wednesday to Friday last week, Daily Trust learnt from impeccable military and political sources in Maiduguri yesterday.”
It is unknown what exactly the military might have an issue with in the story but on Sunday, January 6, Daily Trust published an editorial in which they reaffirmed the earlier report that insurgents indeed overran military and naval bases in and around Baga, including the headquarters of the Multinational Joint Task Force, which is located in the town.
The editorial titled ‘FG is Running Out of Excuses’ is believed to have infuriated the military further.
