YBTC News-The Nigerian Police in Kaduna said it had so far arrested forty-two members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, otherwise known as ‘Shiites’ in the state capital.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mukhtar Aliyu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the arrest was in connection with the bloody protest which led to the brutal killing of a police officer in the state capital on Thursday.
Members of the Shiites had between Wednesday and Thursday stormed the state capital to protest what they described as the continued “incarceration” of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, wife, Zeena and other members of the movement held in various dentition facilities in the North.
This was just as El-Zakzaky and wife were being arraigned before the Kaduna State High Court along Ibrahim Taiwo Road in the metropolis.
But the protest later turned bloody, leading to the killing of a police officer, who was stoned to death by the protesters.
Aliyu told Punch correspondents in a WhatsApp message on Friday that the command apprehended the 42 members of the sect and that they would soon be charged to court after investigation.
According to the statement, He said the action of the Shiites were more or less confrontational than a peaceful protest the sect claimed to have embarked upon.
The statement read in part:”The Kaduna State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that again, on the 21st June, 2018, about 1000hrs, the violent members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria popularly referred to as Shiites, armed with guns, knives, IEDs, etc violently attacked every Police officer on site, during which they brutally killed an officer and injured several others.
“The Police Command views their action as confrontational and a calculated attempt to force the Police into conflict with them and disrupt the peace in Kaduna State.
“In the cause of containing this incident, a number of suspects were arrested and will soon be charged to court.
“The Police will not leave any stone unturned in making sure that those who are bent on perpetrating evil through violence are brought to book.”
