YBTC News-It is Double Honours for Nigeria’s youngest ‘Academic’; versatile and brilliant speaker; articulate organiser; an award-winning teen author who is currently an SS III student and current Headboy at Gombe High School as he is expected be in Minna, the Niger state capital by February, leading his school as a participant and speaker at the opening ceremony of the Hadiza Ibrahim Aliyu Schools Festival (HIASFEST) 2020.
The event is scheduled to commence on the 19th to the 22nd of February, 2020.
MEET THE HIASFEST 2020 KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Adamu Usman Garko is the current headboy of Gombe High School. He is a short story writer, an essayist and poet. He is the author of When Day Breaks, a collection of poetry, which was listed among the 15 Best Published Books in 2018 by DailyTrust newspaper; also, the book is a recommended text for 400l English students of Gombe State University.
Adamu Usman Garko has won a number of awards and recognition: in 2018, he was invited by the Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka to his (Soyinka’s) hometown in Ogun State, where he had a face-to-face encounter with Nigeria’s only Nobel Laureate. After serving as a judge in the Northeast Zonal Competition for Decipher Solutions Spelling Bee Competition for secondary school students, he was invited by Decipher Solutions to attend the grand finale and spoke to the participants on the pursuit of education, in Abuja.
Garko was the Artist of the Month for the Yesmin Elrufa’i Foundation September last year, where he was invited by the foundation to grace the Kaduna Book and Arts Festival. And within Gombe, he has been invited to speak at different Gombe State chapter of Sustainable Development Goals; to commemorate the International Peace Day where he was a guest speaker on climate change and many other occasions.
Garko has been published by numerous newspapers, local and international magazines. A search of his name on the internet testifies he is everywhere. Nigeria’s most influential newspapers like DailyTrust, Blueprint and others have published Garko. Garko has also been published in London; his short story ‘Dew Falling At Dawn’ was published in an international anthology curated by Dr. Rajdeep Chowdhury, an award-winning curator from India. Garko is a winner to numerous literary competitions; he won the Overall Best in an essay writing completion organised by Creative Club Gombe State University and many other competitions within and outside the State.
Adamu Usman Garko has been certified by many organisations for his participation in competitions and workshops, and for his contribution to literacy in Nigeria and the world. He was certified by The Royal Commonwealth Society from The United Kingdom In 2019. He was certified by the Goi Peace Foundation in recognition of his insightful composition on the theme “Creating A Society Full of Kindness.” Halima Factor Initiative certified him in 2019 after he received a 5-day training on Personal Development and Entrepreneurship. Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange also certified Garko for participating in the 9th edition of their event as a delegate from northern Nigeria. Solutions Decipher certified Garko in 2019 for his commitment to promoting literacy and quality education in Nigeria and many other ones.
Garko enjoys his time grooming and mentoring younger minds with interest in writing and reading in Gombe State. He loves exploring places, travelling for the sake of learning newer and older histories, cultures and stories. He loves writing about places he visits, and loves listening to nature. Most importantly, he feels there is nothing more therapeutic to him than flipping through pages of books; and he writes poems most of the time, and essays when necessary. He is the convener of Gombe Book and Arts Festival, an in-coming literary festival in Nigeria to kickstart in 2020.
Adamu Usman Garko’s writings, portrays him as our next generation’s top budding writer following the step of such great writers as Soyinka, Abubakar Imam and Achebe, all combined.
