A crowded press contingent were crammed into Sant Joan Despi on Friday to attend the official confirmation of Andres Iniesta’s Barcelona exit, but Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez were missing.
The midfielder announced that after more than 20 years at Barcelona, he has called time on his career at the club.
He did not reveal where he will go but made it clear that he will not remain in Europe as he does not want to come up against the club he loves.
A board representation was present in the form of president Josep Maria Bartomeu as well as the player’s family, coaching staff and all of the members of Barcelona’s first team squad, minus two: Leo Messi and Luis Suarez.
It was surprising not to see the team’s second captain and the Uruguayan forward present at such an important in Iniesta’s career.
The version that Barcelona gave to explain the absence of the players is they had a private affair to attend to which overlapped with the press conference.
That is something which has truth to it as the Blaugrana only called the conference at just three hours notice.
